Le chardon-Marie, Silybum marianum, est une plante herbacée bisannuelle de la famille des Astéracées originaire d’Europe du Sud et du pourtour méditerranéen. Les grecs de l’Antiquité utilisaient déjà le chardon-Marie pour diverses applications.

Plus de 200 recherches ont été effectuées sur le chardon-marie. Elles ont permis d’identifier dans le fruit (la graine) trois substances actives (silybine, silychristine, silydianine), formant un

complexe connu sous le nom de silymarine.
